February / March 2011 Tour (12)
Alex picked me up at the station and drove to her and Torsten’s place - we had a couple of hours free before the concert. She’d mentioned that it might be possible to make a recording at the house for a compilation they were putting together - but the theme was children’s songs, and I had been stumped as to what to bring to the table. We sat with coffee and talked some and then I...

I arrived in Basel and walked 10 minutes to Carambolage for the last concert in Switzerland - Nadja had played here previously and recommended it to me and sure enough Jonas the owner gave me a warm welcome. A lovely corner bar, people arriving already for the show and plenty of time to sit and eat some wonderful Thai food together whilst setting up the mics.
No one else was playing so I worked...

Arrived in sharp sunshine in Thun and an hour to sit by the lake listening to Marissa and her reverb before heading to Mundwerk. I’d played here twice before and both times fun enough but somehow a little stress each time - tonight turned out to be lovely and grand and all good indeed.
Plenty of time after 5 minute soundcheck so I walked through the old town to incredibly delicious...

Woke in hotel in St Gallen and walked downstairs to the bar to hang out with beer drinking, guitar collector American fellow Tom. Lovely breakfast and a few glasses from the tap and then left the cases there and went out to walk up the hill and find the three lakes. I walked around the frozen water in the bright sunshine and sat for an hour watching someone tougher than Superman swimming between...

My first set of screenshots from this wonderful film are here, and I fnished watching this for the 20th time or so the other night so here’s some more.
Tomorrow I have a concert in Dresden in the afternoon (FB here) and then it’s back to Berlin for a week before shows in Poland. Time enough for more movies on trains then.

Eindhoven to Nürnberg should have been a five hour journey, with a couple of simple changes at the border and again in Düsseldorf. Alarm bells ringing straight away when the first train pulled into the station pumping out pretty awful carnival music and full of people in costume with vuvuzelas permanently fixed to their mouths. 40 minutes of trying to combat this with MBV’s...

Woke wounded in chilly Utrecht and helped Nadja with her things to the car. Of course there was a frost so with the heating broken there wasn’t much chance of a comfortable drive back to Hamburg for her. Nadja always a pleasure to travel with and sad enough to see her drive off on her own with such a long journey ahead. I soon got over it and went back to bed of course.
Spent a nice...

So we played in Aachen to a small audience with of course one person kind of having a running jibe thing with me through the set - not too tough and kept things interesting enough. Later we walked the cold hill back to the hostel, slept great but woken early with many spanish phone conversations with mothers and not so quiet packing of bags in the room. I hate to stay in a hostel, but the owner...

Have been waiting for more from the lady, but in the meantime there’s plenty here to wet one’s appetite over dinner.

I’m a bit behind with the posts of course, been hard to find the moments to get these online and it’s tough to type and drive at the same time. Anyway, now I’m writing this on a train south into Switzerland after a lovely little stop off in Nürnberg to recharge the batteries. Had an hour in the bath, long sleep in the best bed in Europe (apologies to Ridder and her cloud, but...

In Düsseldorf we’re playing with Stefan Honig at the Petit Papillon. When we arrive it seems like it’ll be a case of singing whilst people eat and talk, but in the event it really fills up and we play to a room full of people really listening and getting involved with the thing. Nadja breaks out System 5 for help on my ‘I Do Wrong’ and we all have a great time. After the...

Three or four hour ride back south and west to Düsseldorf, past Osnabrück again. Last night we played at a great location in Bremen - Bismarckstr. 106 - a wohnzimmer konzert of sorts, a large living room with a pa in a big house with lots of beautiful, cool young folks packed in there. My friend Uli - who makes music as H Gudjonsson - had asked us to play many months ago at another venue in...
